Hi all,

I bought a second hand Saunders Fell-Packer. The guy who was selling it had
it advertised as a Saunders Jet-Packer and, from half pitching it in the
living room, it does look to me very much like a Saunders Jet Packer but the
name on the side says Fell-Packer. I've searched on the net but there's not
one mention of a Saunders Fell-Packer anywhere. Does anyone here have any
info?

I'll probably give Saunders a call if no-one has any info but it'd be nice
to hear your expert opinions! :-)

Cheers, Jiffy

Indeed there is a Fell-Trek and a SpacePacker. There is also a Space-Trek, a
Galaxy, a Satellite Plus, a Triton, etc. Apart from the Jet Packer (same
shape, porch opening, etc), none of these bear much resemblance to my
Fell-Packer. I'm not sure about exact dimensions or weight but I hope to
take these measurements soon.

I have an old Saunders catalogue with the Fellpacker in. It's undated
but I guess at least ten years old. The design and dimensions are
identical to the Jetpacker Plus but the weight is higher at 2.5kg and
the Fellpacker is made from polyurethane coated nylon rather than
silicone nylon. So it looks like a less expensive version of the
Jetpacker Plus. If I remember rightly the Fellpacker was around before
the Jetpacker in fact. The design goes back much further. My first top
quality tent was a Saunders Backpacker II in the 1970s, which was the
same design as the Fellpacker/Jetpacker Plus.

and I've still got a very old and tattered Backpacker GC2 in my cupboard!
Never use it nowadays but it holds some great memories.

My Backpacker II disintegrated long ago and I threw it out. I wish I'd
kept it now.

Wasn't the GC2 the one with two upright poles at the front?

That's the one - and it had a "fancy" fly material (well - it was fancy for
the time). Two uprights certainly made entry and egress easier, plus better
for cooking etc. The material gradually started to get worn from being
packed with poles and pegs and then subjected to 1,000 km journeys in a
motorbike pannier. Then some of the stitching started to fail, and one of
the fly zips had to be replaced. I guess that it was in active service for
around 12-13 years, even being preferred against my Spacepacker on solo
walks. I always had a soft spot for Saunders tents after that one . As
someone already said, I'd be happy to see the Spacepacker updated with some
more modern materials.

Hello,
I had a Fellpacker a long time ago-I mean like 1985 or so! It was a heavy
cheaper version of Jetpacker.
All the best,
John.
